Plumbing emergency? Here is what to do

Burst pipe, overflowing toilet or water coming through the ceiling? Stay calm. These steps limit the damage while our plumber is on the way.

What to do right now

1. Turn off the water at the main stop valve, usually under the kitchen sink or where the pipe enters the house.
2. If water is near sockets, lights or the fuse box, do not touch them. Switch the power off at the main panel only if you can reach it safely and dry.
3. Open the cold taps to drain the pipes, and turn off the water heater.
4. Move valuables away and soak up water with towels.
5. Take photos of the damage for your insurer, then call us.

• Do not use electrical items in standing water.
• Do not try to repair a burst pipe with tape for longer than it takes us to arrive.
• Do not use chemical drain cleaners on a blocked toilet that is overflowing.
