When a pipe bursts, the first thing to do is stop the water. Every home has a main stop valve, and finding it before you need it is one of the best things you can do for your house.
Where to look
- Under the kitchen sink, the most common place.
- Where the water pipe comes into the house, often in a garage, basement or utility room.
- Outside, under a small metal cover near the street (the meter box).
How to turn it off
Turn the valve clockwise until it stops. If it is a lever, turn it so it sits across the pipe. Then open a cold tap to drain the pipes.
